After recently upgrading to Xubuntu 16.10 Yakkety Yak (what the heck is that btw!), things started going sideways. Several of the packages were broken as the other package developers couldn’t keep up with Canonical Inc.
Apparently, WPS-OFFICE, the best free alternative for MS Office in Linux (the look and design is 80% similar to MS Office), suffered from the same fault. After some nail biting and hair pulling for two days, found a workaround to install WPS Office in Xubuntu 16.10.
Apparently, it depends on a libpng12-0 package which is not available, after downloading it manually from the Debian Jessie repository, installing was a piece of cake.
Download it from here for your appropriate architecture.
After downloading, install with the following command.
sudo dpkg -i libpng12-0_1.2.50-2+deb8u2_amd64.deb
duck@ubuntu:~/Downloads$ sudo dpkg -i libpng12-0_1.2.50-2+deb8u2_amd64.deb
Now installation of WPS Office was a like a walk in the park.
duck@ubuntu:~/Downloads$ sudo dpkg -i wps-office_10.1.0.5672~a21_amd64.deb
