[Solved] New Tab is not opening in Firefox 24

Firefox

Firefox

After upgrading to Firefox 24, many of the users having problem as new tabs are not being opened, no matter how many times you click the + sign or hit ctrl+T. It actually opens the tabs, but you can’t see it.

This problem is mainly caused by the toolbar you are using.

Disable the ASK toolbar or Google Toolbar, and you are good to go. But unlike ASK, Google Toolbar is ancient and unsupported for a long time. People like me just can’t stop using our favorite Google Toolbar. So, what option do we have? Setting browser.newtab.preload to false in about:config fixed it for me.

Solution to the Firefox new tab not opening problem

Setting browser.newtab.preload to false in about:config fixed it

Type about:config into your browser, and click I’ll be careful, I promise.

then type browser.newtab.preload into the long search bar that appears,

then set the Value to False, restart browser and it should be working fine just like it did for me.

  1. Nice one, thanks for that. I also can’t part ways with the good old Google Toolbar and I was blaming two other extensions (Tab Mix Plus, Tree Style Tab) but they were innocent. Thank god I stumbled upon your blog entry.

  2. Kudos to the one that figured this one out! I also use the abandoned Google toolbar with Firefox – mainly for the “translate” function – and was really disappointed to think it had finally reached the end-of-the-line. Especially, when there doesn’t seem to be any reasonable replacement in view.

    • I am still using Google Toolbar in Firefox 27.😀
I don’t like Chrome that much because of its resource hungriness.😀
Thanks for the comment by the way.
