EDUROAM WiFi Configuration in Kubuntu

EduRoam is an encrypted WiFi connection available at many universities, not only in KTH.The advantages of using Eduroam instead of KTH open is, EduRoam encrypts your communication, while KTHOPEN is vulnerable to eavesdropping, means if you use KTHOPEN, someone with packet capturing software can see what you are doing on internet. Worst case is you lose all your passwords, credit card pin and what not!

Another advantage of EduRoam over KTHOPEN is you dont need to reconfigure your WiFi when you visit other university campuses.

KTH provides very good tutorial to connect with EduRoam only for Windows and MAC, but unfortunately, not for Linux distributions like ubuntu or Kubuntu. There are some articles on KTH site (http://www.lan.kth.se/eduroam/linux/linux_guide.html) about Linux, but i found those more confusing. After having several trail and error, i found a way to use EduRoam in Kubuntu. I am actually writing this article for myself to remember the steps.

Enough chit chat. Let’s see how we can configure EduRoam on Kubuntu 12.04.

Eduroam Configuration:

1. Connect using KTH open for the first time with KTH.se email address and network secret.

2. Then download the file http://www.lan.kth.se/eduroam/AddTrust_External_CA_Root.pem
and save as: AddTrust_External_CA_Root.asc

or

Create a text file, paste the following code, and save as: AddTrust_External_CA_Root.asc
